§ Fund For Our Economic Future “Regional Dashboard Indicators Project”
Economic Analysis performed in partnership with the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research. Project challenges included establishing a set of economic measures for Northeast Ohio that can be used to benchmark the region’s performance relative to other regions. The study suggested ways to track the progress of key factors shown to be highly correlated with the region’s economic growth as well as linkages between the Fund’s initiatives and overall regional economic performance. § Ohio ICE Institute: As Associate director, facilitates and coordinates the instrumentation, controls, and electronics (ICE) industry research institute –a partnership of industry and academia that includes ICE leaders such as ABB Automation, Rockwell Automation, Keithley Instruments, and the Engineering Schools of Case Western Reserve, University of Akron, Kent State and Cleveland State University. Envisioned as a globally recognized center for research, product innovation, commercialization and technology transfer, this group was recently awarded $32 million from Ohio’s Third Frontier Program to expand their efforts.
§ Judson Foundation: Examined the economic impact of adding a third campus, South Franklin Circle, to Judson Retirement Community. This in-depth study assessed the benefits of Judson’s capital investment and operations expenditures as well as determined the impact on the local economy.
§ Mahoning/Shenango Valley Advanced Manufacturing Initiative: Worked in collaboration with Youngstown State University and various regional partners to formulate an economic development strategy for advanced manufacturing firms in Youngstown, Ohio and the Western Pennsylvania area. The analysis included historical and forecast data related to the regional economy, a location study and target industry recommendations. Coordinated interviews and conducted three roundtables with key officials and manufacturing executives. Developed strategic direction statement and organizational structure for industry cluster council.
§ The Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council (OADAC), Economic Strategy to Improve Ohio’s Aerospace and Defense Industries. Kleinhenz & Associates was engaged by the Ohio Department of Development to profile Ohio’s Aerospace and Defense Industries. The study identified industry issues and prioritized actions, programs and policies that the state should pursue. Kleinhenz & Associates as primary contractor teamed up with Case’s Weatherhead School of Management’s Center for Regional Economic Issues and Cleveland State University’s Center for Economic Development to offer a strong combination of resources for this project.
§ The Economic Development Alliance (EDA) of St. Clair County Michigan, Targeted Industry Study: Kleinhenz & Associates, in alliance with Silverlode Consulting, completed a comprehensive target industry study to assist EDA in formulating an economic development strategy to be implemented over 5 years. The analysis included historical and forecast data related to the regional economy, a location study and target industry recommendations.
§ Team Northeast Ohio (Team NEO) and Hopkins International Airport, City of Cleveland, Northeast Ohio Regional Air Service Study, Part I: Prepared major study focused on the composition of Northeast Ohio’s regional economic base and how it’s changing in response to market dynamics. This study was designed to support the foundation for conventional economic forecasts and is to be used for projecting passenger traffic, air cargo traffic and airfield operations.
§ Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland – Regional Economic Issues Study: Arranged meetings with regional economic scholars throughout the Fourth District to identify key issues that deserve to be prominent in regional discussions about economic development. Kleinhenz & Associates identified the key economists to include in these discussions, facilitated meetings, prepared a summary report identifying and prioritizing the key regional economic issues with the Bank’s research director. Then coordinated and planned a symposium meeting at the Bank in October, 2003.
§ Greater Cleveland Business and Arts Coalition, Regional Economic Impact of Ohio House Bill 95: Developed a comprehensive research and policy report assessing the economic impact of imposing sales taxes on parking and entertainment events on the Cleveland- Akron Metropolitan economy as proposed by Ohio House Bill 95.
§ SBC Ameritech, Assessment of Economic Benefits of Entry into Ohio Long Distance Market: Conducted an economic impact study in partnership with The Center for Regional Economic Issues at Case Western Reserve University. This in-depth study examined the effects of Ameritech entering Ohio’s long distance market on employment, income and tax revenues.
§ Northeast Ohio Barometer of Economic Attitudes Cleveland Foundation Poll of Public Attitudes: Study was carried out in collaboration with The Gallup Organization, The Cleveland Foundation, Cleveland State University and the Greater Cleveland Growth Association to examine public perceptions on the then current performance and outlook of Northeast Ohio’s economy.
§ Greater Cleveland Growth Association, 2001-2002 Strategic Plan: As chief economist, research and planning officer, coordinated the conceptual and work plan structure. This project was designed to develop a framework to capture the ideas and objectives of key initiatives and individuals from around the region, and filter them into a vision and plan with clear priorities.
§ Northeast Ohio Regional Economic Development Strategy Initiative: Project director for highly recognized economic development initiative (Industry Clusters Project) collaborating with CEOs to chart vision and implement strategies from various industries including polymers, life sciences, insurance, motor vehicles, instruments and controls, and information technology. Regional partners included the Greater Akron Chamber, Cleveland Tomorrow and the Greater Cleveland Growth Association. Led efforts to obtain initial and continued project funding -- $600,000. Managed a multi-faceted approach to analyze the region’s economy, integrating four analytical research studies, created program that launched strategic planning programs for identified clusters. Organized regional executives into action teams.
§ NatCity Investments Inc., Heartland Airlines: Undertook a large-scale economic impact study that examined the effect of proposed capital investment and operating expenditures by Heartland Airlines in Montgomery County and the State of Ohio. Using a REMI model, Kleinhenz & Associates, evaluated the regional impact on employment, income and output.
§ Wilbur Smith Associates, Economic Impact of RTA Red Line Extension: The aim of this project was to complete an economic assessment of the proposed construction and operation of three transit alternatives. The approach evaluated the impact of direct (design, construction and operation of the extensions) and indirect (private residential and commercial buildings and associated employment) investments associated with the three transit alternatives. The REMI economic model for Cuyahoga County was utilized in these estimations.
§ Cleveland State University, Assessment of Job Tax Credits and Investment Credits on Ohio Economy: Kleinhenz & Associates evaluated data collected by CSU to assess the impact of State of Ohio programs aimed at creating new jobs. Utilizing the REMI model to provide results and analysis, Kleinhenz & Associates tested the effects of the credits and jobs on indirect and induced employment as well as the changes to real disposable income and gross regional product.
§ Cleveland State University, Economic Impact of the Edison Centers on the State of Ohio. In association with Cleveland State University’s Urban Center, Kleinhenz & Associates evaluated the economic impact on Ohio’s economy of the reported activities of the Edison Centers. Using the REMI model for Ohio, the assessment evaluated the impact on the state’s employment, income and gross state product.
